Hunting Road Trip!

Yet feet that wandering have gone,  Turn at last to home afar. ~ The Hobbit.

Gentle Readers and Loved Ones,

This Gadabout will kinda, sorta return to the Gadabout travelogue format. This will not be my best Gadabout ever and in fact is merely a vehicle to show you the two photos at the bottom of the blog.

Last week was Ann and my week at the cabin.  It's late Autumn and I got a good solid week of hunting in.  Rory and I had a really good time together.  We didn't fill the freezer, but we had a really great time!

Our week was up today.  I decided to drive home and hunt using a really circuitous route through NW Wisconsin.  I've been intending to do this for years.   To orient you, south of Danbury WI, the WI/MN border is the St Croix River.  North of Danbury, a straight north/south road, with the astonishing name "State Line Road" marks the border.

I took this breathtaking picture traveling north on State Line Road.

State Line Road

Everything to the left of center line is Minnesota.  Right is Wisconsin.  I will leave any political associations to you, my Gentle Readers.

About 3 miles north of this picture, there is an ATV / Snowmobile trail that runs through grouse cover over to the wonderful little establishment called the Hillside Inn.  Rory and I stopped in several places on the ATV trail over to the Inn and engaged in desultory hunts.  Rory got to run around which always makes him happy.  We found no game and took no shots.  There is a two track road complex south and west of the Inn that we poked our nose into for a bit.  It is now on my list of places to scout better in the future.

I had brunch at the Hillside Inn where I totally enjoyed my cup of coffee and my Philly Cheese Steak.  Had a great rambling hunting discussion with the proprietor and he gave me a hamburger patty for Rory when I returned to the truck.  I quartered up the patty and used it to reward Rory throughout the rest of the day.

After Hillside, I drove up through Dairyland and east on WI County Rd T to Crotte Brook Road.  I have several hunting locations scouted out up there and Rory bounced up the second Woodcock of the year.  He was proud.

Finally, we get to the meat of this story.  Thank you for hanging in this far.  We drove up to the Empire Swamp complex and Rory bounced up three grouse in various places.  I took these fine pictures during the the three hours we spent circumnavigating the Empire Swamp area.

Empire Swamp is touted as being one the most isolated areas in Wisconsin and maybe the US.  There are very few roads and thousands of acres of woods.  I just know Sasquatch was out there laughing at my obviousness.

Following our exploration of Empire Swamp, I worked my way west over across the state line and down MN HW 23 to Askov and then home on Interstate 35.

On that happy note, I remain
Dad/Geoff
